First Run of 2008

Wendy, Margaret, Christine, me, Dave, Ruth, and Carole after the race

Today, we were in the wee village of Lumphanan for the Detox 10K, the first 10K race in 2008 in Scotland. It was cold and damp, but there was a good atmosphere and we enjoyed our day out. There had been warnings about the hill at the start of the course, but it didn't seem that bad. What really got me was the muddy farm track at about 6k which seemed to drain what little energy I had left. I finished in 55:23 - pleased at a new PB, but disappointed that I haven't beaten Vikki's best ;) and with a fair bit of work still to do to get down to 50 minutes.

Happy New Year to all the Shanks clan!
Congratulations on the new PB. I'm guessing you've got s few months still to catch up on Vikki before she's competition again?!
When is No3 due to arrive anyway?

Happy new year to you two! Hope you had a nice Xmas and Hogmanay. My due date is the 22nd but as Lachlan and Calum were both ten days overdue I'm penciling in Feb 1st! I am looking forward to running again but I've no idea when I'll manage it... I think Iain will beat my 10k PB (53:56 mins) at the Garioch 10k at the end of March if he wants to do that race. The Lumphanan race was a tough course.

Happy New Year to you all. Yes, jolly good effort Mr. Shanks. Well done on the 55:23. Vikki, didn't you set your PB at the end of May last year? I'm not good at sums, but that's even more impressive if you were running for two. Not sure Iain can top that one, unless he runs with Calum on his back at Garioch.

great post! And, Iain, you really can't complain at your time - it's still fab!

Vikki: you're just a better athelete! Okay. . . that's what I have been told about the husband when he beat me in a 2-mile run without training (& I HAD been training). ***bah***

Vikki set her PB on the day she confirmed she was pregnant, so her body wsa full of extra drugs and hormones that are probably performance enhancing but not really carrying any extra weight. So she clearly had an unfair advantage. The Garioch 10K has a 60% PB potential according to Runner's World readers, so it's not as flat as Vikki has been making out - also it's on 13th April which is a bit close to Balmoral for my liking.

Yeah, yeah, extra hormones blah blah... It was sleeting and the wind was coming directly off the north sea so half of me was completely numb for a good 3k of that race!! I really don't remember any hills on the Garioch 10k but I would say it was slightly harder than the Baker Hughes due to running across the muddy grass of Strathburn Park at the end. Must've cost me seconds ;-)
Happy new year Ian & Nikki, and Jen & the husband - hope you had a good Xmas and Hogmanay.
